Acharya Ramamurti Biography 
Acharya Ramamurti was a social activist and academician. He was also a Gandhian and educationist who lived during the period, 1913–2010. For his outstanding contributions towards the field of education and social service, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1999. During his lifetime he served as the director of Shrambharati, an NGO which preaches Gandhian philosophy and messages. He headed Ramamurti Review Committee in 1990, which evaluated the progress of the National Policy on Education of 1986.
Acharya Ramamurti was born on 22 January 1913 in Ardhpur, Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He was born into a family of rich farmers. He pursued MA History from Lucknow University before he started his career as a lecturer. In 1954 he joined Government Queens College, Varanasi as a lecturer but resigned his job very soon as he was interested in social service. He joined Shrambharati, a social service community founded by Dhirendra Mazumdar. Acharya too was a follower of Gandhian principles and he later served as the director of this NGO after the death of Mazumdar. As a part of the NGO, he travelled extensively collecting land and propagating the ideals.
He also closely worked with Jayaprakash Narayan in the 1970s and was associated with Bihar Andolan. Later he got involved with ‘Earn and Learn’ movement in Khadigram, educating 30 villages. He was appointed as the chairman of the Review Committee to appraise the implementation of the National Education Policy of 1980, on 7 May 1990 by then Prime Minister V. P. Singh. The submitted report recommended several changes for child and women welfare. He was honoured with Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1998 and Padma Shri in 1999.
