Abdul Qayoom Biography

Abdul Qayoom is a former first-class cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir, best known as a pace bowler. Since retirement he serves as a cricket coach, and has nourished many talented youngsters in the field. The all-rounder Parvez Rasool was his former student. He is J&K’s leading wicket-taker with over 180 scalps, and played domestic cricket in the 1980s in the politically troubled Kashmir. Unerring accuracy was a hallmark of his 17-year-long playing career, and he also led Kashmir team in Ranji trophy as team captain. He is widely regarded as the finest fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from pace and bounce bowling styles, he had the ability to swing the ball and bowl "toe crushers".

 

His full name is Abdul Qayoom Bagaw. He was born on 2 March 1967 in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. His native place belonged to south of Kashmir, on the banks of the Jhelum, in Bijbehara. While studying at Higher Secondary School in his hometown, Qayoom honed his skill. Interestingly Qayoom started playing cricket as a wicket-keeper, and later switched on to pace bowling in 1982–83 season. He completed his BSc course from Bijbehara Degree College and later worked for Air India. During his professional years, he played for Air India cricket team.

 

He marked his First-class debut for Jammu and Kashmir in 1985/86. In the 1989–90 Ranji Trophy, he was the third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 29 scalps. He also joined India-A team list in 1990, where he got opportunity to play Wills Trophy. He became the captain of J&K domestic cricket team in 1993, and also served as captain for the second time in 2000–01. Under his leadership, his team reached till quarter finals of Ranji trophy. He was also known as "poster boy" of Jammu and Kashmir cricket.
