Abdul Najeeb Qureshi Biography

Abdul Najeeb Qureshi is an Indian sprinter from Hyderabad, and one of the fastest male runners of the country. He went on to equal Anil Kumar Prakash’s record in the 100m event, although was slower by 0.2 milliseconds, and finally the record was broken in 2016. Anil set the 100 metres national record of 10.30 s at the National Circuit Athletic Meet held in New Delhi in 2005 winning the gold. Abdul equalled this record in Commonwealth Games conducted in New Delhi in the year 2010. The record was broken in 2016 by Amiya Kumar Mallick with new time, 10.26 s.

 

Abdul Najeeb Qureshi was born on 25 February 1988 in Hyderabad, present-day Telangana. He has been into athletics since his school days at Defence Laboratories School, Kanchanbagh. He was spotted by his PT master Adarsh Goswami, who encouraged Najeeb to follow his dreams. That’s how Abdul pursued a career in athletics and succeeded as well. While attempting to qualify for the semi-finals of the 100m event at Common Wealth Games, Qureshi equalled Prakash’s record, and got qualified as well. But he couldn’t win a medal in the finals.

 

Qureshi also won 200 m sprint at the South Asian Games held at Dhaka, Bangladesh in February 2010. In Guangzhou Asian Games - 2010, he lost his bronze medal in a nail biting finish, by just a hundredth of a second. He was a member of India's 4x100 relay team that won the bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It was during that same event, he equalled Anil Kumar Prakash’s national record in the 100m event, after it was set 5 years ago.
