T. J. S. George Biography

Thayil Jacob Sony George, shortly called T. J. S. George is an Indian writer, a veteran senior journalist and biographer. He was born in Thumpamon, near Pandalam of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Now he is settled in Bangalore. Noted English contemporary writer and musician Jeet Thayil is his son. American TV journalist Raj Mathai is his nephew. George gained popularity among readers as a professional author, serious political columnist and biographer. He is currently the Editorial Advisor of The New Indian Express. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2011 for his contributions to literature, journalism and education. He has been highly appreciated for his biographies on figures like MS Subbulakshmi, Nargis and Krishna Menon.

 

Born as a Keralite, he is one of the finest and experienced journalists from India. He is the founder editor of Asiaweek Magazine. George is the fourth of the eight siblings born in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, to Thomas Jacob, a magistrate. He began his illustrious career with the ‘Fress Press’ Journal in Mumbai in 1950. Later he got associated with International Press Institute, The Searchlight and the Far Eastern Economic Review. As a part of his job he moved to Hong Kong where he started Asiaweek and served as its editor too.

 

As one of the most talented and senior columnist he is known for his hard hitting columns in the New Indian Express. He chose subjects on social injustice, politics and corruption for which he earned instant fame. While heading a daily in Bihar, he became the first editor in free India to be charged with sedition following his comments on then Bihar Chief Minister, K B Sahay.
