Gopal Mittal Biography

Gopal Mittal was an Urdu writer and journalist of 20th century, best known for poetry. He was also a literary critic who lived during the period, 1906–1993. He hailed from Malerkotla, Punjab. A renowned poet among his contemporaries, he wrote Urdu Nazms, Ghazals and Qat'aas. His published collection of poems includes - Doraahaa (1944), Saharaa mein azaan (1970), Sharaar e naghmaa (1984), Sachche Bole (1988) and Kulliyaat e Gopal Mittal (1994). Lahore ka jo zikr kiya is his collection of memoirs. His complete works were collectively published in year 1994 soon after his demise. The book was published as Kulliyaat e Gopal Mittal.

 

Gopal Mittal was born in the year 1906 in Malerkotla, Punjab in British India. His father, Walayati Ram Jain was a Unani practitioner who was quite famous those days. His childhood days were spent in his hometown Malerkotla, where he completed his schooling and later he moved to Lahore for college studies. He was associated with the daily "Subah e Ummid" for a short period while at Lahore. Later he wrote for "Shahkar" and Jagat Laxmi". Till India’s freedom he lived in Lahore, and later shifted to Delhi where he continued with his journalist career with a couple of magazines. He was busy with his literal writings also.

 

Mittal was a progressive writer and a creative thinker. Some of the finest Urdu verses written on "man and his destiny” were penned by Mittal. He was fluent in nazms. His works were appreciated by several renowned writers who lived in the same period. Makhmur Saeedi, Wazir Agha, Jagan Nath Azad, Krishan Mohan, Zia Fatehabadi, Nazir Siddiqi, Bani etc were among the writers who praised his writings. Mittal passed away in 1993 at the age of 87.
