Prannoy Roy Biography

Prannoy Roy is an Indian journalist who is the founder and Executive Chairperson of New Delhi Television (NDTV). He is a news anchor, psephologist and economist. He was born on 15th October 1949 in Calcutta in West Bengal.

His father was Hurricane Roy who was the chief executive of the Indian unit of British company and Irish/ English mother who worked as a teacher. He spent his early days at Kolkatta. He studied at La Martiniere in Calcutta. Then he attended The Doon School at Dehradun and later got scholarship to pursue his education at Haileybury in UK. He finished his B. Sc in Economics in University of London in Queen Mary College. He got first class honors in 1973. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He got Ph. D in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.

He married Radhika Roy in 1972. Radhika Roy is a speech therapist and at present serving as the director of NDTV. Brinda Karat the communist politician of India who served as the member of Rajya Sabha is Radhika’s sister and Arundhati Roy is his first cousin. Radhika and Prannoy have a daughter Tara Roy.

He started his career by teaching at the Delhi School of Economics. He continued in this position for one year and then he served as the Economic Advisor of Government of India. He is notable for his election analysis. He is covering every election since 1984. He is considered as the supporter of market economy in the media. His political views are closely related to that of the Congress party.

He is a member of the neo conservative globalist think tank council of foreign relations, International Advisory Board. He is the member of the Shareholder’s Investor’s Grievance Committee of the Board of Directors of the Company. He is a television analyst since 1980. He is also appointed as the economic adviser to the Ministry of Finance in 1985 and served in this position till 1987. His television show The World This Week made him very popular.
