Fareed Zakaria Biography

Fareed Zakaria is an Indian – American journalist and author and was a columnist for Newsweek from 2000 and worked as the editor of Newsweek International until he moved to the post of Editor of Time in 2010. He is the host of Fareed Zakaria GPS of CNN. He is the commentator about the international relations, trade and foreign policy of America. In 2010 he received Padma Bhushan award in 2010 from government of India for his contribution towards journalism.

 

He was born on 20th January 1964 in Mumbai in Maharashtra in a Konkani Muslim family. His father Rafiq Zakaria was a politician and an Islamic scholar. His mother Fatima Zakaria worked as the editor of Sunday Times of India. Fareed Zakaria studied at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and got his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. At that time, he was the president of the Yale Political Union and editor in Chief of the Yale Political Monthly. He got his Doctor of Philosophy in political science from Harvard University in 1993. He married Paula Throckmorton Zakaria and has one son Omar and two daughters Lila and Sofia. He is living in New York City at present.

 

He directed a research project on American foreign policy at Harvad. He became the editor of Foreign Affairs magazine in 1992. In October 2000 he became the editor of Newsweek International. In August 2010 he moved to Time magazine and serving as an editor and a columnist. He had written on variety of subjects for many magazines and journals and dailies such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker and Slate.

 

He wrote many books namely Wealth to Power: The Unusual Origins of America’s World Role in 1998, The Future of Freedom in 2003, The Post – American World in 2008. He co-edited The American Encounter: The United States and the Making of the Modern World. Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines named him as one of the 100 leading public intellects of the world in 2007.
