Shobhana Bhartia Biography

Shobhana Bhartia is the Chairperson and Editorial Director of the Hindustan Times Group. She is a politician too, belonging to Congress party. She is the daughter of Krishna Kumar Birla, noted Indian industrialist of the Birla family. Thus she is the granddaughter of Ghanshyam Das Birla. Bhartia is also the Pro Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and chairperson of Endeavor India. She has served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha (2006-2012). The World Economic Forum honored Bhartia with “Global Leader of Tomorrow Award” in 1996. She believes that punctuality and time management are the key factors to success.

 

She was born in Birla family in 1957. She was brought up in Kolkata and completed graduation from Calcutta University. She married Shyam Sunder Bhartia who currently serves as the Chairman of pharmaceutical firm, Jubilant Life Science Limited. Their son Shamit Bhartia is also in the business field and serves as a Director at the HT Media group too. Shamit Bhartia is married to granddaughter of Dhirubhai Ambani.

 

She joined Hindustan Times in 1986 as the chief executive, thus becoming the youngest as well as the first female chief executive of Hindustan Times. She has played a significant role in the growth of this daily as well as giving it a youthful touch. She works as editor and looks after the financial accounts as well. As a successful media person and business magnet, she has received many honours including -“Global Leader of Tomorrow Award” in 1996, Outstanding Business Woman of the Year - 2001 and National Press India Award, 1992. For her contributions to the field of journalism, she was given Padma Shri in 2005.
