Narasimhan Ram Biography

Narasimhan Ram is an Indian journalist and prominent member of the Kasturi family that controls The Hindu Group of publications. Ram was the Managing-Director of The Hindu since 1977 and its Editor-in-Chief since 27 June 2003 until 18 January 2012. Ram also headed the other publications of The Hindu Group such as Frontline, The Hindu Business Line and Sportstar, and has been awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India[3] and Sri Lanka Ratna by the Government of Sri Lanka. He is referred to as a left-wing editor and known to believe in left/communist ideology. Subsequent to changes in the Editorial & Business of 'The Hindu' on 21 October 2013, N.Ram has become Chairman of Kasturi & Sons Limited and Publisher of 'The Hindu'.

 

He was born on 4th May 1945. He got his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964 in Loyola College. Then he got his master’s degree from Presidency College in Chennai in the year 1966. He got M.S. in comparative journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He participated in the students’ politics. He was the vice-president of the Students Federation of India. This is politically linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) when it was formed in 1970 in Thiruvananthapuram.

 

He married Susan, an English woman who visited South India as a research student. She was an atheist with Left perspective on politics. She worked as a teacher and a freelance journalist and editor in Oxford University Press publications in India and also as a television anchor. Both husband and wife jointly published the biography of R. K. Narayan. They had one daughter Vidhya Ram who was a Journalism topper at Columbia University in New York and the winner of the Pulitzer fellowship for journalism. Ram divorced Susan and married Mariam Chandy, founder and Managing Director of TNQ Books and Journals.

 

He started his career in 1977 as an Associate Editor in The Hindu. He was made the Washington Correspondent in 1980. He is working with Frontline magazine since the day it was started. He was praised for his writings on Bofors Scandal during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Before becoming the Chief Editor, he served as the Editor of the Frontline magazine and Sportstar from 1991 and 2003.

 

He has received a number of awards for his contributions to journalism including the Asian Investigative Journalist of the Year 1990 by the Press Foundation of Asia, JRD Tata Award for Business Ethics, etc. He is an atheist.
