The lion capital of Sarnath was erected by Emperor Ashoka in 250 BC and this was called Ashoka Pillar or Ashoka Column. The four lions are seated back to back over an inverted lotus. The pillar is still standing at this place and the Lion Capital has been moved to the Sarnath Museum to preserve it from ruins.
