For getting around Thiruvananthapuram, you have some choices as buses, cars, auto rickshaws and two wheelers but there is no local train or metro in this city.

 

Transportation in Thiruvananthapuram by Bus

 

To travel by buses is the cheapest means of getting around the city and these buses are run by KSRTC and private companies. However they are very crowded during peak hours. The route numbers are displayed on them and you have to inquire to know more. Fast passenger buses are also operated. There are six bus depots from where the government buses are operated namely City depot, Vikas Bhavan, Pappanamcode, Kaniyapuram, Vellanad and Peroorkada. The central bus stand is located near the Padmanabha Swamy Temple near the East Fort. The interstate bus station is located near Thampanoor.

 

Transportation in Thiruvananthapuram by Auto Rickshaw

 

You can hire an auto rickshaw from any place railway station and bus stand or from rickshaw stands. They charge based on the meters. The prepaid auto rickshaws are also available in particular places near the airport and the railway station.

Taxis and cars are convenient and cheap if you are travelling in a group. You can hire them for short distance travels or for few days continuously. Usually ambassador cars are seen in the taxi stands. The car rental companies offer chauffeur driven cars. The charges may be higher compared to taxis and so make an inquiry before you book them.

Scooters and motorcycles are the favorites of the local people. You can also rent them when you want to try them here. There are some companies that arrange for tours on Enfield Bullets and you can join them if you are interested in biking.

 

If you are interested in cycling, then there are many of them available for day rent. You can try that for short distances. However there are many places of interest in the city that are located nearer to each other. You do not need any vehicles but can simply walk around to see them. For example you can walk from the Padmanabhaswami Templ to the Gandhi Park in the East Fort and walk from the Museum to the Kowdiar Palace along the Royal Road. Many good coffee shops and snack bars seen here will give you good refreshment on the way.
