Udanti Sanctuary was established in the year 1983 with the aim of protecting the wild buffaloes. It spreads over an area of 274 square kilometers with its eastern border touching Orissa. River Udanti flows through this region giving it the name. Not only that the wild buffaloes are found here but it gives refuge to some other animals also such as wild dogs, hyenas, barking deer, antelopes, black bucks, jackals, foxes and tigers. Some of the birds found in this sanctuary are egrets, parrots, pea fowl and herons.

The tropical dry deciduous forest plants are found here. Some of the vegetations of the region are teak, mahua, sal, hera, tendu, salai, semal, harra and bamboo trees. This is a wonderful place for birdwatchers.
