Thikse Monastery also called Thiksey Gompa is the largest of its kind in central Ladakh. The building has 12 stories and includes many collections of Buddhist period such as stupas, statues, swords and paintings. The main attraction of this place is Maitreya Temple which has been built to commemorate the visit of 14th Dalai Lama in 1970. The 15 meters high Maitreya statue is the largest of its kind in Ladakh and rises to about two stories. The complex includes a nunnery also.

 

The monastery has two main chambers. It is painted in red, ochre and white and about 60 lamas live here. From this place you can get the glimpses of Matho, Stok palace and Shey palace. There is Tara temple dedicated to goddess Tara and this has 21 images in glass covered wooden shelves. On the top floor of the monastery is Lamokhang Temple and only men could go there.

 

Annual festival called Gustor ritual is conducted in the months of October and November and during this time, mask dance is performed. Near this monastery trade fair is held that attracts many people.
