Hemis Monastery is located in Hemis and was reestablished in 1672 by Sengge Namgyal King. This monastery was in existence since 11^th century. Padmasambhava festival is conducted here every year and this is also called Hemis festival. Once in 12 years grand festival is conducted with many rituals and ceremonies. The mask dances have important places in these festival occasions and they are collectively known as Chams.
