Mahamaya Temple is located on the outskirts of Jammu City in the eastern banks of River Tawi. The area is covered with thick forests and is inhabited by peacocks, owls, monkeys and tigers. According to the legend, the area known as Dhara Nagri fell into the hands of the evil ruler and so people started to leave the place. Therefore the visitors to this temple were considerably reduced and the Goddess Kali brought an earthquake to this region to destroy everyone. After a century, according to the dream of the ruler, Maharaja Gulab Singh, the idol of Kali was excavated and this temple was established in the time period between 1822 and 1857.
