Hawa Mahal is one of the important attractions in Jaipur. Hawa Mahal means the palace of winds. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. The front portion of the palace resembles that of a pyramid. It has five stories and has 954 windows. These windows were made of lattice work in sandstone and are called Jharokha. The whole structure looks like a honeycomb. As Jaipur is one of the hottest places in India, this palace is designed so to keep that cool.

Hawa Mahal in Jaipur was constructed for the ladies of royal family. These women were kept under purdah and so the windows and balconies were screened. The best time to visit Hawa Mahal is during the morning when the golden rays of the sun falls on the Mahal. It is opened to public from 9 A.M. to 4.30 P.M. daily.
