The City Palace served as the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur belonging to the Kachwaha Rajputs clan. This palace includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal. It also houses a museum. The construction of the palace was started in 1729 by Sawai Jai Singh II and was completed in 1732. His successors made later additions.

The City Palace has many entrance gates called Tripolia Gate, Udai Pol and Virendra Pol. It has Mubarak Mahal built with the fusion of the Islamic, Rajput and European style. This houses a museum which contains the costumes of the royal families like Kashmiri pashminas, silk saris, beautifully embroidered shawls, etc.

Chandra Mahal is also called Chandra Niwas and is one of the important structures in the complex. It is a seven storeyed building and the names of the floors are Sukh Niwas, Ranga Mandir, Pitam Niwas, Chabi Niwas, Shri Niwas and Mukut Mandir. The mirror work and the floral decorations on the walls are unique.

Pitam Niwas Chowk is the inner courtyard through which you can enter Chandra Mahal. It has four gates representing the four seasons. Diwan-i-Khas is the hall of private audience. It lies between the art gallery and the armory. The two huge sterling silver vessels of 1.6 metres height having a capacity of 4000 litres were made from the 14000 melted silver coins. They have taken place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest sterling silver vessel.

Diwan-i-Aam is the hall of public audience where the king meets the people. The hall is decorated with red and gold ceiling and has an art gallery at present. Maharani’s Palace which served as the residence of the royal queens was converted into a museum. Bhaggi Khana has the collection of old carriages and palanquins. There is Govind Dev Ji Temple within the complex which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The palace is opened daily from 10 A.M to 5 P.M.
