The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary was established in 1858. The local people have good relationship with the birds and are aware of the conservation of wild life.the park was made as a sanctuary in 1939 and it was announced as the reserve forest in 1962. In 1972, it became a wildlife sanctuary.

If you drive another 9 kilometers you can find Karikili Bird Sanctuary. In Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, the birds that are found are night herons, paddy bird, pintails, pond heron, sandpiper, white ibis, etc. The birds from Canada, Sri Lanka, Australia, Bangladesh and Burma come here during the breeding season.

The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March and the best time in a day is early morning when the birds get out of their nests. Many ornithologists have their camps here to watch the birds.
