National Art Gallery is a part of the Government Museum in Chennai. The building in which it is functioning was built in 1907. It was built by T. Namperumal Chetty and designed by Henry Irwin. The gallery displays handicrafts, sculptures and paintings of medieval period, Tanjore paintings and paintings of different schools.

 

National Art Gallery at Chennai includes four sub-galleries namely

 

1. Tanjore Painting Gallery

2. Decorative Art Gallery

3. Indian Traditional Art Gallery

4. Ravi Varma Painting Gallery

 

The paintings of Tanjore, Rajput, Kangra, Moghul and Deccan schools of various types such as those done by water colors, graphics, acrylic mediums and oil paintings are found here. The rock and cave gallery showcases the rock and cave art.
