The State Government Museum is located in the heart of the city and it has six building that house 46 galleries. The complex spreads over an area of 16.25 acres of land. The galleries of the museum are archaeology, zoology, botony, numismatics, anthropology, bronze gallery, chemical conservation, children’s museum, national art gallery and contemporary art gallery.

The Government Museum at Chennai is opened from 9.30 A.M. to 5 P.M. and closed on Fridays and other national holidays. The Children’s Museum has 6 galleries namely dolls gallery, civilization gallery, science gallery, transportation gallery, technology gallery and kids corner. The national art gallery has Tanjore painting gallery, decorative art gallery, Indian traditional art gallery and Ravi Varma painting gallery in that.
