Udayagiri means the mountain of sunrise and it comprises of 20 caves that has importance both in Hinduism and Jainism. These caves were made during the period of Guptas and they were partially structural and partially cut out of rocks. The first cave has the small shrine and simple porch in the front and is quite interesting to note that it represent the first stage of development of temples in India. The caves that have the numbers one, three, four, five, six and thirteen are most visited by the tourists. The cave number 8 has unique features with a passage having natural canyon running east to west.
