The Government Museum of Bangalore is located on the Kasturba Gandhi Road near Cubbon Park. The building of the museum was constructed in 1876 and was designed by Colonel Sankey. It was opened to the public from 1886.

 

There are two exhibition floors here which are divided into eighteen galleries that have different sections like sculpture, numismatics, geology and natural history. The ancient coins and the remnants of the Indus valley civilization, the excavations of Vijayanagar, Mohenjadaro, Chandravalli and Halebid are kept here.

 

The prehistoric artifacts of Neolithic period, ancient jewelry, inscriptions, coins, terrocota works, sculptures of Hoysala, Chola, Gandhara and Chalukya period, Tanjore paintings, paintings of Rajasthani and Pahari schools, ivory carvings, sandal wood works are displayed here.

 

The time of visit of the museum is from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. It is opened all days except Wednesdays and public holidays.
