Wilfy Rebimbus Biography

Wilfy Rebimbus was a popular Konkani singer, musician and lyricist, who was also known as the “Konkani Kogul". The title was given by The bishop of Mangalore in 1971. He lived during the period, 2 April 1942 – 9 March 2010. He was diagnosed of cancer in 2009, and died of complications on 9 March 2010. He was a good athlete and Kabaddi player during his childhood days, and has scripted plays in his teens. This legendary artist is credited for taking modern Konkani music to new heights with his unique compositions and singing style.

 

His full name is Wilfred Gerald Rebimbus. He was born in Mangalore into a Christian family in the year 1942. Landeline Rebimbus and Magdeline Mendonca are his parents. His father is from Kerala, and mother from Goa. Wilfy Rebimbus’ school education was done at Mangalore following which he did a mechanical course. Then he worked as an apprentice in a workshop. Right from the school days, Wilfy was interested in singing. He actively participated in singing competitions and won many prizes as well. He had started composing Konkani songs at the age of 14. He wrote his first Konkani play at the age of 15. Poixeancho Sonvsar was his first play, which was staged also. He was a good athlete too.

 

At the age of 17 he started a musical troupe named United Youngsters Music Party. Its name was later changed to United Youngsters Cultural Association. Over the years he played a magnificent role in popularizing modern Konkani music among music lovers. He spent more than 4 decades in the singing field, before he finally gave in to cancer. He was survived by his wife Meena Gracia Rebimbu, a pop singer.
