Wajahat Khan Biography

Wajahat Khan is a renowned sarod player and musician of present times. As a performer he started his music journey in 1977 at the age of 3 and has toured across the globe with his music performances. Thus, known as a child prodigy he is currently fully active in his musical journey. He is the third son and disciple of sitar and surbahar player Imrat Khan. Thus he is a grand-nephew of renowned artist sitar player Vilayat Khan and a member of the musical Khan family which founded the Imdadkhani Gharana. Currently he shuttles between India and London with his music concerts.

 

Wajahat Khan belongs to a family with rich music tradition. He is one of the latest members of musical Khan family, founders of Imdadkhani Gharana. His family was traditionally linked with sitar and surbahar, and he was one of the early artists who broke this tradition and fully concentrated his career on Sarod. Initially he was associated with sitar and surbahar and he took to Sitar only in his teens. He was taught the musical instruments - sitar and surbahar by his father Imrat Khan. He started singing in public at the age of three and delivered a performance for BBC Television the same year.

 

He has performed extensively around the world since young and has got opportunity to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms Festival in the UK, Glastonbury Festival, Kremlin in Moscow etc. In 1991 he wrote and performed his first sarod concerto in Germany. He primarily focussed on traditional Indian classical music, though he has experimented with fusion music as a composer and performer. He has also collaborated with many internationally known artists.
