Vidya Shah Biography

Vidya Shah is a singer, musician, social activist and writer. She hails from Delhi. She was initially trained in Carnatic music. Later received guidance in the North Indian genres of khayal from renowned Shubha Mudgal and Mujahid Hussain Khan followed by thumri, dadra and ghazal from Shanti Hiranand. Now she is active with her live concerts. Anja (Album Realize) and "Far From Home" (Album Medieval Punditz) are her released music albums. Shah is also a writer and lyricist, and serves as a member of cultural committee of South Asia Foundation.

 

Vidya Shah hails from Delhi. She belongs to a family with music background. She started learning music at the age of 12. Initially received training in Carnatic music, due to fondness in Hindustani music, she later learnt it from different gurus, including Shubha Mudgal – a leading voice of Indian classical music. She also learnt a little bit of tribal music when she got opportunity to stay in a tribal area of Madhya Pradesh for a brief period. She is married to designer-photographer Parthiv Shah, and has two children.

 

Apart from live concerts, she is active with her music in All India Radio and Doordarshan, and other TV channels. She has also been associated with independent films and documentaries, and also performed at international platforms. She also owns a few albums to her credit such as Anja (Album Realize), "Far From Home" (Album Medieval Punditz) etc.

 

Her social activities began in 1991 with Indo-German Social Service Program. She has also associated with many social organizations like Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sanghatan of Madhya Pradesh. She is a founder member of Paridhi Research – Rights based women's organisation, related to child birth and sexual health.
