Uma Ramanan Biography 
Uma Ramanan is a well-known playback singer associated with Tamil cinema. She is a leading Carnatic vocalist who is regular with her live concerts as well. A senior vocalist in Carnatic music, she has performed for more than 6,000 concerts in a career spanning to 35 years. She has been associated with A. V. Ramanan, a Television host, performer and actor, and the duo has given together several stage performances. They got married later. As a playback singer she is best known for her association with music maestro Illayaraja, with whom she has recorded more than 100 film songs during 1980s and 1990s. Nee Paathi Naan Paathi from Keledi Kanmani is one of the memorable songs of this amazing combination.
Uma learnt Carnatic music from Pazhani Vijayalakshmi during her academic studies. She also trained in classical dance from Padma Subrahmanyam. She participated in many inter-collegiate competitions and won prizes as well. Her meeting with A. V. Ramanan proved to be a turning point of her career. The duo has given many successful live concerts over the years. A successful host and performer, Ramanan was in search of fresh voices for his stage concerts and he found Uma’s voice suits it the best. They got married later and the couple has a son who also is a budding musician.
Soon after Uma’s engagement with her colleague Ramanan, she got her first break for playback singing. The duo sang a duet for 1976 released Hindi film Play Boy and the first break was given by cameraman, Janakiraman. The duo sang a duet for Tamil film, Shri Krishna Leela in 1977. Since then Uma has been regular in playback singing throughout 1980s and 1990s. Illayaraja gave her the big break through "Poongathave Thaal Thirava" song for the film Nizhalgal. "Kannum Kannumthaan ("Thirupaachi") and "Ithu Enna Ithu Enna Puthu Ulagam ("Sivakasi") are her noted film songs after year 2000.
