Taufiq Qureshi Biography

Taufiq Qureshi is an Indian percussionist and a composer. He has also been a part of background score and music for several Bollywood movies. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and ABCD – Anybody can dance are among his recent projects. He is the son of legendary tabla player, Ustad Alla Rakha and younger brother of Ustad Zakir Hussain. He has been a part of many international collaboration albums like Global Drum Project, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussions and Summit. Global Drum Project is a Grammy award winner for the year 2009.

 

He was born in the year 1962 in Mumbai. He is a dedicated self-learner who started learning and performing music at a younger age. He has been a disciple of Ghatam Vidhwan, Pandit Vikku Vinayakram. He formed his own world music band, ‘Surya’ in 1986 which has done several performances abroad. With his dedication and hard work, he has reached a position among the most sought after rhythm-programmers, arranger-composers and percussionists for studio recordings. He has been associated with film songs, background score, television serials, jingles and advertisements.

 

He is equally verse in playing instruments like djembe, duff, bongos and batajon. Taufiq has done pioneering work on the African drum- Djembe and is the first artiste to develope a unique rhythmic language to adapt the Tabla syllables on the instrument. He incorporates body and vocal percussions to create unique rhythmic motifs.  He has done jingles for Manikchand Paan Masala, Babool toothpaste, Taj Mahal Tea, Tanishq Jewelry, Britannia Good Day Biscuits, Indian Railways and Paragon sandals. He received best music award for Indian railways jingles at Cannes Film Festival. Nike Jingle helped him to earn London International awards.
