T. V. Sankaranarayanan Biography

T. V. Sankaranarayanan is a Carnatic musician from Tamil Nadu. He is the nephew of leading Carnatic vocalist, Madurai Mani Iyer, and also belongs to the family of leading musicians of late 1800s and early 1900s - Madurai Pushpavanam and his daughter Rajam Pushpavanam, accomplished artists of the time. Madurai Pushpavanam was his granduncle and Rajam Pushpavanam was his aunt. Sankaranarayan is a recipient of Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2003. Same year Government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Carnatic music in the second half of 20th century.

 

His full name is Tiruvalangadu Vembu Iyer Sankaranarayanan. He is also known as TVS in the music circle. He was born on 7 March 1945 in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu. The place then a part of British India and Madras Presidency now belongs to Nagapattinam district. He was initiated to the world of music by his uncle Madurai Mani Iyer at the age of 9, and later he established in this field, earning name of his own. He has been regular in music concerts across Tamil Nadu, and earned fame of a leading Carnatic vocalist.

 

He made his first public appearance in the year 1968, and in a career spanning to more than 5 decades, he has received many honours and recognitions, including the most prestigious Padma Bhushan by Government of India. Nadakanal By Nadakanal, Ganakalaratnam by Dr. Semmangudi Srinivasa Ayyar in 1987, Gayaka Sikhamani by Bhairavi, USA in 1981, Sangeetha Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy in 2003 and Sangeetha Kalasikhamani by The Indian Fine Arts Society in 2005 are some of the major honours received by him.
