Suvra Mukherjee Biography 
Suvra Mukherjee was a First Lady of India serving from the year 2012 until her death in 2015. She was the wife of famous politician and former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. Suvra Mukherjee is the first ‘First Lady’ to die during her husband's presidency. She passed away on August 18, 2015 soon after three years of her position as First Lady of India. She was also a renowned singer best associated with Rabindra Sangeet, songs composed by Tagore. She was a painter and a writer of two books - Chokher Aloey and Chena Achenai Chin.
Suvra Mukherjee was born on 17 September 1940 in Jessore in British India. Her birth place is now a part of Bangladesh. As a child she moved to Kolkata at the age of 10 with her family. The family got permanently settled there. She married Pranab Mukherjee on 13 July 1957 and had three children. Her children are associated with politics, affiliated to Indian National Congress. Their son Abhijit Mukherjee serves as Member of Parliament from the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency from West Bengal. Their daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee is a Kathak dancer, choreographer and politician. The couple has one more son - Indrajit Mukherjee.
Surva completed two Master’s degrees and also worked as a teacher in the 1970s. She was an ardent fan of Rabindranath Tagore. She was also a renowned Rabindra Sangeet singer. She was associated with his drama troupe and performed in India and other countries too. She has been a part of several dance-dramas for many years and has been a vocalist with the troupe. She founded the Geetanjali Troupe, whose mission is to propagate Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy as expressed through his songs and dance-dramas. She was also a highly talented painter who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit.
