Suvir Misra Biography

Suvir Misra is an Indian musician and exponent of traditional string musical instrument, Veena. He performs in three styles of string instrument - Rudra Veena, Saraswati Veena, and Surbahar, and it’s indeed an amazing talented person who mastered three different musical instruments being a left hander. He also invented Misr Veena - a hybrid of a Saraswati veena and a Rudra veena, to re-introduce veenas to the Hindustani classical music concert scene. Except for Dhrupad Sangeet, Veena is rarely used in Hindustani traditional music. He is a civil servant in government sector, working as Commissioner of Customs, Customs and Central Excise, Mumbai.

Suvir Misra was born in Harda, Madhya Pradesh into a family with music traditions. He completed schooling from Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. His journey with music began at the age of 12 in his early teens. Initially he received training in Rudra Veena from Zia Fariduddin Dagar. He also learnt dhrupad from Nirmalya Dey. He continued learning different styles of music – Hindustani music in Gwalior Gharana from K. N. Iyenger, sitar from N. R. Rama Rao, tabla under Bandu Khan of Ajrara Gharana and finally Veena from S. Balchandar in Carnatic tradition, which fascinated him a lot.

When he felt that old musical themes cannot influence modern life style very much, he decided to incorporate contemporary style into classical themes. He introduced modern Hindi mukta chhanda poetry within Dhrupad composition structure, and has experimented with many structures like this, to popularize music. Apart from performing in Rudra Veena across the globe, he also makes the musical instrument. Now attempts are being made to bring extinct Veenas like Jantari, Kinnari etc to modern music scene.
