Sudha Malhotra Biography

Sudha Malhotra is one of the earliest female playback singers of Bollywood. She has been active in Bollywood during the eras of 1950s and 60s, and she too belongs to the group of those unfortunate talented female singers who faded away with rise of Mangeshkar sisters in the film industry. One of the most exceptional singers of the '50s and '60s, she was honoured with the Padma Shri on the eve of India's 64th Republic Day. She has also sung some regional songs and has composed some, of which Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jao is the most popular composition. She sang the song aside Mukesh and hence credited to one among those rare female composers of the industry who has sung her own composed song. Her Marathi Bhav Geet with Arun Date is equally popular.

She was born in New Delhi in 1936. She completed graduation in music from Agra University. She was discovered as a child artiste by Master Ghulam Haider, a prominent music director of the 1940s. S. D. Burman and Madan Mohan were other two senior composers of the music industry who recognized the potential of this accomplished singer. She got her first berak through ‘Mil gaye nain’ of Arzoo composed by Anil Biswas. Salaam-e-hasrat qubool karlo and Kashti ka khamosh safar hai are among her most memorable songs.

Her songs are included in classic movies like Arzoo, Dhool Ka Phool, Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Girl Friend, Barsat Ki Raat, Didi, Kala Pani, Prem Rog and Dekh Kabira Roya. Her last recorded song was for the movie Prem Rog in 1982. She was linked with famous lyricist, Sahir Ludhianvi. She is a prominent name in ghazals and has sung with Jagjit Singh and Mohammed Zahur ‘Khayyam’ Hashmi.
