Subir Sen was an Indian singer from West Bengal, associated with Bengali and Hindi movies, and also Rabindra Sangeet. He was honoured with a Lifetime achievement award by Harmonica Sangeet Samman in 2007, Sangeet Maha Samman by Government of West Bengal in 2012 and "Banga Bibhushan" by the Government of West Bengal in 2013 and many other honours. Dil mera ek aas ka panchhi from Aas Ki Panchhi, Dekho Na Jao Jane Man from Boyfriend, Sedin Dujone Dulechhinu Bone – a Rabindra Sangeet song from Anubhav etc are among his noted works in Bollywood. He was active in Bollywood in the 1960s.
Subir Sen was born on 24 July 1934 in Dibrugarh, Assam. His father was a doctor, who owned a pharmacy in Guwahati. He had 4 siblings. He completed his matriculation from Guwahati, and moved to Kolkata to pursue a career in music. Since young he was inclined towards music and secured first prize in a Classical Vocal Music Competition at Morris College, Lucknow, during his school days. In 1951 he came to Kolkata and took admission from Ashutosh College, and also took music lessons from Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, and also thumri from Usha Ranjan Mukherjee.
During his graduation days, he got selected KEREJU Music Competition conducted by HMV, from 1400 contestants, and it gave him a new direction in the career of music. Anupam Ghatak was his mentor those days. He released two Bengali modern songs in 1954. Later he was invited by Bollywood filmmaker Guru Dutt to work at his production house, which he accepted. In 1971 he also made an appearance as a singer for Basu Bhattacharya’s Anubhav. The song - Sedin Dujone Dulechhinu Bone tuned in Rabindra Sangeet was also recorded in his voice by Kanu Roy.
