Srabani Sen Biography

Srabani Sen is an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet and Bengali songs. Indrani Sen is the daughter of singer Sumitra Sen, and the younger sister of Indrani Sen, known for Nazrul geeti and Rabindra Sangeet. In 2000, she received B.F.J.A award for the best female playback singer for the song, Amala Dhabala Paaley in director Rituparno Ghosh’s film, Utsab. It was a soulful rendition of Rabindra Sangeet. Apart from Rabindra Sangeet, she is also associated with Adhunik Bengali Songs and Nazrul Sangeet. Her name is also spelt as Sraboni Sen.

 

Srabani Sen hails from a musical family of Kolkata, West Bengal. Her mother Sumitra Sen is a well-known Bengali singer. Her elder sister Indrani Sen is also a prolific singer of Rabindra Sangeet. Initially she was musically guided by her mother. Later she received rigorous training at Geetabitan Music Institute, which helped her a lot to groom her career. When she turned 18, she had only two choices before her, either to get married or to pursue a career in the field of music, and she chose the second one.

 

She schooled at Patha Bhavan in South Kolkata and later majored geography at Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College, affiliated to Calcutta University. Thereafter she began her career as a journalist in a Bengali magazine. After that she opted for a full-time career in the field of music and succeeded in her profession. Currently she is one of the leading female voices of Rabindra Sangeet in Bengal. As of now she owns more than 45 solo albums to her credit. She is also regular with Rabindra Sangeet concerts across the globe. She has also done playback singing for a few Bengali films.
