Siyaram Tiwari Biography

Siyaram Tiwari was a renowned musician and classical singer of Hindustani classical music, who lived during the period, 10 March 1919 – 1998. He practised and performed Dhrupad style of Hindustani music. He belongs to the Darbhanga gharana, based in Patna. He was the first exponent of the gharana to promote fast-paced laykari in Dhrupad. He is credited to develop and formulate this singing style in the second half of 20th century. This renowned musician of 20th century was awarded the Padma Shri by Government of India in 1971 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1984, for his outstanding contributions towards the field of music.

 

Pandit Siyaram Tiwari was born on 10 March 1919 in Darbhanga, Bihar, British India. His hometown now belongs to Darbhanga district and Darbhanga division. He hailed from a family of musicians, who followed this tradition. Tiwari received initial training in Hindustani music from his maternal grandfather, who practised in Dharbhanga gharana. Later he took lessons in Khyal, Thumri and Bhajan from his father Baldev Tiwari.

 

Pandit has been an A-grade artist in All India Radio, and he performed across North India. His singing style was known for Swara, Meend, Gamak and Laykari, and he practised and performed Dhrupad style of Hindustani music. Dhrupad is believed to be the oldest style of classical vocal music performed today in North India, and Tiwari is one among the foremost artists in the post-independent era. The legendary singer of the Darbhanga Gharana has performed frequently at AIR and many of those recordings are still preserved and available online. Many such renditions now exist in private collections, recorded privately and not as records.
