Sikkil Gurucharan Biography

Sikkil Gurucharan is a young Carnatic singer belonging to a family of top flautists. He hails from Chennai, and is one of the promising vocalists of present generation. He is the grandson of Sikkil Kunjumani, one among the famed ‘Sikkil sisters’. Thus he is the grandnephew of Neela. He is an 'A' grade All India Radio artist, and is fully active with his career in singing. S. Gnanaskandan and B. Krishnamurthy are his gurus in Carnatic music.

Sikkil Gurucharan was born in Chennai on 21 June 1982. At the age of 5, he started learning music from Sikkil sisters – his grandmother and grandaunt. His singing style and depth in singing impressed his grandaunt Neela a lot. His near-perfect alignment of the notes also impressed her a lot. It was the decision of Sikkil Sisters that Gurucharan should pursue a career in the field of vocal music, though all the family members were traditionally flautists.

After moving to Hyderabad, he took lessons in vocal music from his mother and also trained in tunes which his sister played in flute. In 1990 when the family moved back to Chennai, Sikkil sisters sent him to Vaigal Shri S. Gnanaskandan, disciple of Dandapani Desikar and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, so that he gets the best training in Carnatic music. Gnanaskandan ensured that Gurucharan took music seriously. He gave his first public performance in 1994, and later travelled across the country and abroad.

He completed his master's degree in Financial Management from Loyola College, and then had a brief stint as a radio jockey at Worldspace Radio. When the radio station shifted to Bangalore, he decided to stay in his hometown. Later he pursued music as full-time profession.
