Shreya Guhathakurta Biography

Shreya Guhathakurta is a young singer from Bengal who concentrates on Rabindra Sangeet. She completed formal training and diploma from Dakshinee and also studied under Kanika Bandyopadhyay. Shreya is the granddaughter of Suvo Guhathakurta, who started two Rabindrasangeet institutions in Kolkata - Gitabitan & Dakshinee. She is also the niece of Rabindrasangeet exponent, Ritu Guha. She is one of the most popular Rabindra Sangeet singers of the present generation. Through her talent she bridges the gap between old traditional style of singing and the new style and that’s why she is equally appreciated by all. Her singing style is often compared with Kanika Bandyopadhyay.

 

She was born in Kolkata in a family of musicians in 1975. She started formal learning of music at the age of 4. She also received training from Kanika Bandyopadhyay, who regularly used to visit her residence and Shreya considers this renowned artist as her biggest inspiration. At the age of 4, she rendered her voice for a Bengali film, “Deepar Prem” and acted as a child artist in the movie too. Later she rendered her voice for the acclaimed Bengali movie, ‘Antardhan’ in 1995. She took formal learning of Rabindra sangeet at Dakshinee, founded by her grandfather. She graduated in the year 1994 and sang for a movie, Antardhan the following year. Yet she continued her learning process under her paternal uncle, Sudeb Guhatkurta.

 

Later she started giving live performances, not only in India, but across the globe and has also participated in music festivals. She has also performed for different stations of All India Radio. She has recording over 800 songs for ‘Tara music’ and most recently received ’Shyamal Sen Smrriti Puroshkar’.
