Shiv Dayal Batish Biography

Shiv Dayal Batish, also known as S. D. Batish was a music composer and singer from Patiala who lived during 14 December 1914 – 29 July 2006. He worked in Bollywood cinema in the early talkies as a music director and singer before he moved to UK in 1964. Betab, Bahu Beti, Toofan, Harjeet, Tipu Sultan, Ham Bhi Kuch Kam Nahin, Amar Keertan, and Zalim Tera Jawab Naheen are some of his noted works as a music composer. He also collaborated with many artists of international fame to produce fusion music, and has played an important role in popularizing Indian music in the West. He has also authored numerous books on raga and music.

 

S. D. Batish was born on 14 December 1914 in Patiala. He was also known by the name Nirmal Kumar and Master Ramesh. His association with All India Radio began in 1936, when he did his first radio show. He also composed music for many movies in the 1930s and 1940s. By 1950s he started performing outside India.  In 1964 while he was performing at a festival in Wales, Cardiff, his music impressed Lord Fenner Brockway, who helped him to migrate to UK.

 

After moving to UK he continued with his music career, and also recorded a number of songs for the BBC. He became a regular radio and television artist, and he promoted Indian music through his programs. He composed the theme song "Nai Zindagi Naya Jivan” for BBC television show Apna Hi Ghar Samajhiye, wrote the lyrics and rendered his voice as well. He wrote the book, Raga Chalans, a Ragopedia in 7 volumes and Rasik Raga Lakshan Manjari in 2 volumes.
