Sheila Chandra Biography

Sheila Chandra is an English pop singer and author of Indian descent. She has stopped singing in 2010 because of burning mouth syndrome. She has released many albums and singles since 1980s, and was most active in the 1990s, when she reached her career peak. Pop, world fusion, world beat and house are different genres of music with which she dealt with. Her single Ever So Lonely from her first ever album Third Eye, in 1982 helped her to come to limelight for the first time.

 

Sheila Chandra was born on 14 March 1965 in London. She is of Indian descent. Her full name is Sheila Savithri Elizabeth Chandra. She has been a theatre artist before turning a singer, and has been a child artist. She played the role of Sudhamani Patel in the BBC school drama Grange Hill from 1979 to 1981 through which she came to limelight for the first time. She was in her teens then. Soon after she formed the band Monsoon with Steve Coe and a few artists, she started working on fusion music combining Western and Indian pop, and released their single album, Third Eye, in 1982. The song included the chartbuster single, "Ever So Lonely", which peaked at No. 12 in the UK, followed by "Shakti," at No. 41 which played an important role in establishing her career.

 

Her music band was dissolved the same year and Sheila started her independent career after that. She released numerous singles in the 1980s and later, till she took retirement from singing in 2010. Weaving My Ancestors' Voices (1992), The Zen Kiss (1994), and ABoneCroneDrone (1996) are some of her major works of 1990s. She worked as a studio artist extensively in the 1990s.
