Shahul Hameed Biography

Shahul Hameed was a Tamil playback singer associated with A. R. Rahman. He has delivered many memorable hits in A. R. Rahman’s compositions in the 1990s. His association with this legendary musician began in the 1980s when Rahman was working on jingles. His short lived career span includes some memorable hits like "Usilampatti Penkutti" of Gentleman, "Senthamizhnattu Tamizhachhiye" of Vandicholai Chinraasu, "Rasaathi En Usuru" of Thiruda Thiruda, "Pachhai Kili Padum" of Karuthamma, "Vaarayo Thozhi" of Jeans, “Urvasi Urvasi” and "Pettai Rap" of Kathalan and many more.


A resident from Tamil Nadu, Hameed was a regular TV show singer in the late 1980s. Isaithendral was one of the popular TV shows in which Shahul regularly appeared as a singer. He met Rahman in 1982, while performing in a music concert. Rahman was composing jingles in those days and very soon their association began. Shahul hameed sang a few songs for Rahman for 1989 Muslim devotional album - Deen Isai Mazhai. Shahul rendered his voice for the tracks - "Ellam Pughazhum Iraivanukke", "Yengal Abdul", "Nagoore Shahul Hameed" and "Nagoore Naharalum Tooya". Later too, the combination was repeated several times in the early 1990s.


Shahul’s big break to playback singing happened in the year 1993, when he was offered the popular song – Usilampatti penkutti of the movie, Gentleman. He sang the duet aside Swarnalatha and the song was pictured on Arjun and Madhoo. Later Rahman used his voice to sing many popular songs of almost all his movies of 1990s till his death. Thiruda Thiruda, May Madham, Pavithra, Kizhakku Mugham, Uzhavan, Kizhakku Cheemayile, Karuthamma, Jeans, Kathalan etc are some of those works. He died in a car accident in Chennai in 1998.
