Sajan Mishra Biography

Sajan Mishra is an Indian Hindustani vocalist who sings in the khyal style of Indian classical music. He gives his public performances along with his brother Rajan Mishra, and the duo is known by the name – ‘Rajan and Sajan Mishra’ in the world of Hindustani music. Sajan is 5 years younger to Rajan Mishra, and they were born in the years 1956 and 1951 respectively. They are of Varanasi origin and now settled in Delhi with their live performances and professional career. They have been jointly honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2007 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998.

 

Sajan Mishra is the younger brother born in 1956. He was born into a musical family in Banaras, and was brought up in a musical atmosphere. He received early training in Hindustani music from his great uncle, Bade Ram Das Ji Mishra, and also their father, Hanuman Prasad Mishra. They also received training in Sarangi from Gopal Prasad Mishra. Started musical studies at a very young age, they also gave public performances right from teenage. In 1977 they moved to Delhi and got settled there. They have been living there for the past four decades or so.

 

When their father groomed to become trained vocalists, he never imagined that his sons would be blessed with this much fame and popularity. They managed to assimilate the essence of the age-old Banaras Gharana with consummate ease, which earned them a lot of music fans. The brothers also developed a beautiful understanding between themselves when they sang together. Apart from the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the siblings have received numerous honours including Gandharwa National Award for 1994–1995 and National Tansen Samman 2011–2012. Now they are settled in Delhi.
