Sabita was born in Kolkata in 1945. She started her playback singing career in 1954 with Bollywood film – Darwaza, and was active throughout 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Aankh Ka Nasha released in 1956 gave her the first major break. The movie included some of her popular tracks like "Mehfil Me Aayi Haseena", "Nigahe Karam Kar De Shahe Madina", "Thi Aarzu Ki Chaman Me", "Jayega Janewale Kaha", "Kuch Kareeb Jab Se Wah Begana","Ae Dil Hum Toh Huye Ruswa" etc. She went on to record 66 songs in Hindi, which include songs from Masoom (1960), Usne Kaha Tha, Kabuliwala, Anokha Milan, Baaje Ghungroo etc.
