S. Sowmya Biography 
S. Sowmya is a trained Carnatic singer from the state of Tamil Nadu. She is quite popular in her live Carnatic concerts. She co-authored the first comprehensive reference CD-ROM on Carnatic music, Nadanubhava, and also serves as a visiting professor at the Advanced School of Carnatic Music of the Music Academy Madras. She is currently a member of the academic council of the Tamil Nadu Music & Fine Arts University. She is a first rank holder during her graduation and post-graduation studies at University of Madras in the 1990s, and a gold medal winner. She holds many honorary titles too, given by different cultural organizations.
S. Sowmya was born on April 16, 1969 in Tamil Nadu. She belongs to a family with strong musical background. She was initiated to Carnatic music at a young age by her father Dr. Srinivasan, who is a Carnatic singer. Later she continued her studies under Dr. S. Ramanathan and T. Muktha. She was a brilliant student in academic, especially music and chemistry and has been awarded with Royal Institute of Chemistry award for Chemistry quiz at school and college levels. In fact she was a second rank holder for BSc Chemistry at Meenakshi College, Madras University in 1992, and later she completed her Master’s in Chemistry also.
She started learning music in detail after completing her academic studies in Chemistry with excellent marks. She completed MSc Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. About her musical career, she gave her first public performance at the age of 11. She gave her first performance at the Madras Music Academy in 1986 at the age of 17 and has been performing there since then. She has also toured in many foreign countries.
