S. C. Krishnan Biography

S. C. Krishnan was a Tamil playback singer who sang for many old films and also Tamil plays. He lived during the period, 1929-1983. He passed away at a comparatively young age in his early 50s. Apart from his role as a singer, he also composed songs Chennai Television (Doordarshan) Kendra for some time. As a playback singer he worked with iconic composers like K. V. Mahadevan, Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, G. Ramanathan, S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, Ghantasala, C. N. Pandurangan, S. V. Venkatraman, T. R. Pappa, G. Govindarajulu Naidu etc in the glorious era of Tamil music. His comedy songs are most popular.

 

His full name is Sivaganga Chelvam Achary Krishnan. He was born in the year 1929 into a Saurashtrian family of jwellers. He hailed from Ramnad district of Tamil Nadu, and belonged to a traditional family of jewellery makers. During his early days he was a stage actor, and also sang for many Tamil plays. As a stage actor, he has shared stage space with actors, N. S. Krishnan and K. R. Ramaswamy, before foraying into Tamil cinema as a playback singer. As a teenager he was a part of K.R.Ramaswamy’s Krishnan Drama Sabha drama troupe.

 

By the age of 20, he was dissatisfied for not getting offers in movies for acting. So he quit this drama troupe and joined Modern Theatres studio as a paid actor in year 1949. Though he played brief roles in a few movies made in early 1950s, he gained recognition as a singer. In 1952, he made his playback singing debut with the movie, Kalyani, produced by Modern Theatres studio. He sang the duet, "Endha Kaariyamaayinum Ulagamidhuve Ulagamappaa" aside K. Rani for the movie. After getting more singing offers, he quit his acting career.
