Robin Chatterjee Biography

Robin Chatterjee was a Bengali music composer associated with early talkies. He was most active in the era of 1940s, followed by 1950s and 1960s. Robin turned a full-fledged music composer through 1942 film Parinita, and later composed beautiful and evergreen songs of Godhuli, Bipasha, Sagarika, Kamallata, Dwiper nam tiya rang etc. Piya Piya Piya Ke Dake Amare of Godhuli and Amar Swapne Dekha Rajkanya from Sagarika are his most popular songs of 1950s.

 

Robin Chatterjee hailed from Bengal. He took formal training in Hindustani music, before he tried a hand in Bengali cinema as a music composer. He got his first break through 1942 film Parinita and the songs got well-noticed. It was a time when playback singing had just came in, and cinema was still ruled by singing actors. However Robin worked with many leading voices of Indian film industry over the years and he also worked in a few Hindi films during his glorious years.

 

He frequently collaborated with film director Agradoot in the 1950s and 1960s, and some of their popular films include - Sabar Upore (1955), Pathe Holo Deri (1957), Lalubhulu and Bipasha, with leading singers being Sandhya Mukherjee, Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, Manobendra Mukherjee etc. He has also worked with leading singers of Bollywood in the classic era like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, and also Bengali singers like Hemant Kumar and Aarti Mukherji.

 

Robin Chatterjee gave first break to Arati Mukherjee, and it happened after Robin served as a celebrity judge to a singing competition, where Arati appeared as a participant. When asked if she would prefer to sing for Bengali films, she said yes. Later she went to become a leading playback singer of Bengali cinema.
