Ratul Shankar Biography 
Ratul Shankar is an Indian percussionist and actor from Bengal. He inherited music as her tradition and belongs to the fourth generation of artists of Shyam Shankar Chowdhury, whose sons are Uday Shankar and Ravi Shankar, legendary Indian artists. He is the son of film artist, Mamata Shankar – the daughter of contemporary dance couple, Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar who popularized Indian art forms globally. Legendary musician Ravi Shankar was his great-uncle. Other music legends who belonged to his family include – his great aunts, Annapurna Devi and Lakshmi Shankar, his aunts Viji Subramaniam, Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones, his uncles - Ananda Shankar and L. Subramaniam, his cousins - Gingger Shankar, Ambi Subramaniam and Bindu Subramaniam, and many more.
He was born in Kolkata on July 30, 1979. Born into an artistic family, he was exposed to different forms of art at a young age. Since the age of two he has toured with his parents for stage performances in many foreign countries. He was trained under Tanmoy Bose. Though he has been associated with different forms of art, music remains his first love. He is deeply influenced by his uncle late Ananda Shankar known for fusion music. He has deep roots in film field as well. His mother Mamata Shankar is a Bengali film actress. He also acted in two Bengali films, Anuranan and Utsab. He concentrated most on his music career.
He is associated with World Music Project “TAAL TANTRA” and has been performing as a member for last 13 years. He also got the privilege to perform with several world class musicians like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Bickram Ghosh, Pete Lockett, Niladri Kumar, Carl Peters, Soweto Kinch etc. He has also travelled across the world with his music projects extensively.
