Ram Kadam Biography

Ram Kadam was a popular music composer and director of Marathi cinema. He was active in the film field since the first phase of the talkies in the 1940s and was associated with Marathi cinema for 5 decades. He started his film career as an office boy at the Prabhat Films in Pune and made his debut as an independent music director through Meeth Bhakar (1949) directed by Bhalji Pendharkar. His most memorable songs are included in the movies – Pinjara, Gavgund and Sangte Aika. He has also composed music for a few plays and was popularly known as an accomplished lavani composer of his times.

 

Ram Kadam was born in Maharashtra in 1916. His music career began with a music band where he played the clarinet. Later he took formal training in Hindustani music from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, the doyen of Kirana gharana and Lavani style of folk singing from famous artist Patthe Bapurao. He got associated with the newly established Prabhat Films in Pune as an office boy. Later he worked as an assistant to music director, Sudhir Phadke. Meeth Bhakar released in 1949 marked his debut as an independent music director. He scored music for about 200 films.

 

Though he became a busy music composer very soon, he was also associated with lavani music and one of the leading names as a lavani composer. He was associated with theater as well and has composed music for theater productions like - Nartaki and Katha Aklechya Kandyachi. Later he turned a producer and in association with lyricist Jagdish Khebudkar and director Anant Mane, he started a production house called "Chitra Mauli”. Painjan released in 1995 was his last work. He passed away in 1997.
