Rajeev Alunkal Biography

Rajeev Alunkal is a popular poet and lyricist of Malayalam. He resides at Alappuzha, Kerala. His favourite themes are romance and philosophy. In 2012, he received Kalasree Award from Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy for lifetime achievements as lyricist. His published books are Nilavilitheyyam- A collection of poems (2008) and Ente Priyageethangal - 1001 selected songs (2009). As a lyricist, he has penned words for Malayalam movies – Sound Thoma, Nadodi mannan, Chattakari, Isacc Newton Son of Philipose, Romans, Killadi Raman, Sarkar colony, Black butterfly, Mallu Singh, Thakkali, vettom, Black cat, Kancheepurathe Kalyanam, Hariharanpillai Happiyanu, anjiloraal Arjunan and Husbands in Goa. Till now, Rajeev has contributed 250 songs for more than 60 films.

Rajeev was born on August 17, 1973 in Alappuzha to Kandanatt S. Madhavan Nair and Karuvally R.Indira. Kadakkarappally of Cherthala is his native place. He published his first poem in 1987 at the age of 14. The poem published in NSS Weekly won Mannam Trophy for best upcoming poet. He started his career as a professional lyricist in the year 1994 writing songs for dramas. His first association was with Cherthala Shylaja Theatres. He debut films as a lyricist in the year 2003 with Mohanlal movie, Hariharanpillai Happiyanu. The song, Thinkal Nilavil was a chartbuster at that time. Later he penned lyrics for Kanaka Simhasanm, Bada Dost, Vettam etc.

Rajeev is active in theatre works too and owns more than 1000 songs for 200 professional dramas in his credit. He has also penned lyrics for more than 2000 songs including private albums and serial songs. Chembavallikalil - Oru Marubhumikkatha, Nilave.. Nilave..- Chattakkari, Iniyum Kothiyode - Bharya Onnu Makkal Moonu and Kannnippenne of Sound Thoma are a few among his chartbuster songs. In 2012, he received Kerala Film Critics Association Awards for Best Lyricist of the song, Chempaka vallikalil of Oru Marubhoomikkadha. Priyathame Shakunthale of kananasinhasanam also won him the same award in the year 2006.
