Kalpatta Narayanan Biography

Kalpatta Narayanan is an Indian writer belonging to Malayalam literature. He is a well-known novelist, short story writer, essayist, columnist, and poet, who hails from Kalpetta of Wyanad district, Kerala. In 2017 he received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Literary Criticism for his book, Kavithayude Jeevacharithram. In 2018, he received Padmaprabha Literary Award for his outstanding contribution to the Malayalam literature. His other major works include Basheer Literary Award and Ayyappan Puraskaram.

Kalpatta Narayanan was born in January, 1952 in Kalpetta of Wyanad district, Kerala. Hence he uses the prefix - ‘Kalpatta’, his native village for his name. Palukkappil Sankaran Nair and Narayani Amma are his parents. Kottathara is his exact birth place. His schooling was done from hometown and higher education from Government Arts and Science College, Kozhikode. After studies he started his career as a lecturer at Government Brennen College, Thalassery. He later worked in different colleges of Calicut University. After retirement he serves as a visiting professor at the University of Calicut.

His literal works include – novels, short stories, literary criticism, poetry, research works and general essays. Ithramathram is the single novel he published in his entire literary career. His anthology, Oru Mudanthante Suvishesham bagged Ayyappan Puraskaram in 2013. In 2015 his work Kavithayude Jeevacharithram was selected for the Basheer Literary Award. He writes columns for different forms of publications including journals. Ee Kannadayonnu Vacho Nokkoo in Madhyamam and Budhapaksham in Malayala Manorama are among his most popular columns.

Some of his poetry works are "Oru Mudanthante Suvisesham", “Ozhinja Vruskshachayayil”, "Samayaprabhu : kavitakaḷ" and "Karutha Paal". "Nizhalattam - Oru Cinema Preskshakante Athmakatha” and "Konthala" are his memoirs. He is still fully active in his literal journey.
