Thamizhachi Thangapandian Biography

Thamizhachi Thangapandian is a Tamil writer, orator, academician and politician belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a prominent regional party of Tamil Nadu. She currently serves as a parliamentarian in the 17th Lok Sabha, and it is her first term in Lok Sabha. She got elected from Chennai south Lok Sabha constituency. She writes predominantly in Tamil, and also authors books in English. She has also penned lyrics for a couple of Tamil movies – Pisasu and most recently Paris Paris. She also wrote the dialogues of Paris Paris.

 

Thamizhachi Thangapandian was born on April 25, 1962 in Mallankinaru into a family with strong political background. Her birth name is Sumathy. Her father V. Thangapandian was a DMK leader, two term legislator and minister of schools. Her younger brother Thangam Thennarasu is a prominent politician and 2-term legislator from Tamil Nadu, who served as the state minister for School Education of Tamil Nadu during 2006-2011. Along with her writing and orator skills, she also got into active politics, following the family tradition, associated with DMK.

 

In 2019 general elections, she defeated sitting MP J. Jayavardhan of Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to claim her first parliament seat. With the victory of first-time contestant Thamizhachi Thangapandian, DMK reclaimed South Chennai, which has had leaders such as C N Annadurai and Murasoli Maran. She secured over 5.6 lakh votes and won against Jayavardhan with a margin of 2.6 lakh votes.

 

She started her writing career after her father passed away in 1997. She took writing as a healing process. As a writer some of her major Tamil books are Manvasam, Poonaigal Sorgathirku Selvathillai, Uravukal, Vanapechi, Pecharavam Ketilaiyo, Manjanathi, Naveenathuvathai Kamban, Katru Konarntha Kadithangal, Kalamum Kavithaiyum, Soll Thodum Thoram, Pampadam, Aruhan, Mayileragu Manasu, Avalukku Veyil Endru Peyar and Enjottu Penn. She authored two English books - Island to Island and Internal Colloquies.
