Raja Kumari Biography
Svetha Rao, best known by her stage name Raja Kumari is an Indian American rapper, songwriter and recording artist from Claremont, California. Firing verses on traditional ‘taals’ of Bharatanatyam, she is known to be a desi rapper who earned recognition. Apart from many singles, she has also been associated with Bollywood music also. Most recently she marked her playback singing debut with Bollywood film, Race 3, for the chartbuster song Allah Duhai Hai, aside Amit Mishra, Jonita Gandhi and Sreerama Chandra. She sang the rap part of the song and wrote lyrics for the movie too.
Her birth name is Svetha Yellapragada Rao. She is an Indian classical dancer who started her training classes at the age of 7. She is of Indian origin, but her family is settled in US. She was born in Claremont, California, United States on January 11, 1986. She completed her graduation in religious studies. Kumari discovered hip hop through the Fugees' album The Score, while she was studying in fifth grade, and since then she got attracted to this genre of music. She turned a freestyle MC (Master of Ceremonies) by the age of 14, and took the stage name Indian Princess” (IP) or “Raja Kumari” as she wanted to change the world’s idea of Indian music and culture.
She has also performed worldwide for charity shows, for collection of funds. Apart from singing, she also writes songs. In fact she started with writing songs before turned a full-time rapper. “Change Your Life" in 2013 was the first one to begin with. She wrote and performed for the songs - “Mute” and Vicetone – "Don't You Run featuring Raja Kumari". In association with Anirudh Ravichander, she penned lyrics for the song, "Never Give Up" for the movie, Vivekam. She has been honored with the Kohinoor Award for excellence in the Classical Arts by the Governor of Tamil Nadu for her philanthropic activities.
